GIRONDE. Father Vergnes, parish priest of Saint-Michel de Ri - Lot 295
GIRONDE. Father Vergnes, parish priest of Saint-Michel de Rieufret. L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, archbishop of Bordeaux, in London. 3 pp. large folio in fine handwriting. Baltimore, USA, March 4, 1798. Address on the back with postmarks. Small tears. A long and thrilling account of the epic Atlantic crossing of this priest destined to settle in Canada, made on board an old American ship, The Fame, which took on water at the start, and which only succeeded in crossing by a miracle and the continual dedication of its 20 passengers and 13 crewmen (2 of whom fell overboard and disappeared) and the miraculous arrival of a small vessel when the ship was taking on water on all sides and everyone believed its last hour had come. Father Vergnes was destined to settle in Canada with his traveling companion, but having, like most of the passengers, lost all his belongings during the transfer to the boat, he was taken in by the Bishop of Baltimore.
