FINISTÈRE. Jean-François de LA MARCHE (1729-1806), the last - Lot 294
FINISTÈRE. Jean-François de LA MARCHE (1729-1806), the last bishop of Léon (from 1772 to 1801); he emigrated to London and welcomed the priests of the Paris Foreign Missions into exile. L.S. and L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, 3 pp. in-4. London, 1795-1798. An address on the back. The bishop of Uzès having received from the archbishop of Rheims a printed document with the title, Avis concernant l'exercice du St ministère dans les circonstances présentes, he proposes to have it printed for distribution to all the archbishops and bishops of France residing in England. He asks for his contribution. In a second letter, he tries to convince him that there is no schism between Champion de Cice and his confreres. "You can quote to them the religious ceremonies in one of which you were celebrant in which your fellow-members met and gave you public proofs of their communion with you. You can also certify to them that since you have been in England, there have been only particular conferences between a few bishops and never a general assembly held or convened []".
