Jérôme CHAMPION DE CICÉ (Rennes 1735-1810), archbishop of Bo - Lot 286
Jérôme CHAMPION DE CICÉ (Rennes 1735-1810), archbishop of Bordeaux. Handwritten letter with autograph corrections, 10 ½ pp. in-4. [London], April 17, 1797. Very long answer of Mgr Champion de Cicé to the work of Lally-Tollendal, entitled Défense des émigrés français adressée au Peuple français, published in 1797. " []. I can see that if you did not want to defend the totality of the emigrants, you would have said with truth that most of them had been forced to emigrate by motives which honor and reason must respect, that they are in the same case as those who emigrated during the time of Robespierre, and that consequently there is no need for new exceptions to recall them []. You would know me very little if you believed me to be partial in this discussion. I am and want to be only just and human and I have the right to require that you be also [] ". Attached is an autograph draft of Bishop Champion de Cicé, a fragment of his memoirs on the Revolution (2 pp. in-4).
