STRONG MAN. Anonymous letter addressed to the editor of the - Lot 262
STRONG MAN. Anonymous letter addressed to the editor of the Annales, in Paris. 1 p. ½ in-4. Paris, February 21, 1818. Address on the back with a wax seal encoded. Mounted on tab. Very curious account of a feat performed by "the athlete Charles Rousselle dit l'Hercule du nord", the day before, in a street of the faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris. A very heavily loaded wheat cart, pulled by 4 horses, was blocked in a stream in the middle of the rise of the faubourg. "A dozen spectators tried to free the cart and push the wheels up, but it was a vain effort, everything was still. In a moment of respite, and as if by magic, the cart was lifted six inches off the ground and climbed up alone with ease; then the curious and the poor driver cried out for a miracle, the horses resumed their momentum and arrived at the top of the hill when the athlete Charles Rousselle, known as the Hercules of the North, the sole author of this scene, was seen to emerge from above the cart. [Charles Roussel dit Chacharles (Lille 1781-1826), known as the Hercules of the North, was gifted with extraordinary strength, as were several members of his family].
