CHINA. 3 manuscripts of the same provenance, mid-19th century, from an anonymous hand. - "Report of the Shanghai crossing from Chefou to Woosung" (4 pp. in-8). "Left January 17 at 2:00 a.m., we found the breeze from SE until the next evening, a leak in the starboard boiler forced us to slow down the speed until 9:00 p.m. []." - Draft of a letter to a newspaper: "I have the honor of pointing out a fact which inserted in your newspaper could open your eyes []: "Lately I was in Tientsin; while passing on the beach I saw on a Russian gunboat moored at the edge of the quay a modified propeller []" (4 pp. in-8). - In the same hand, manuscript of 16 pp. in-8 (draft with corrections), on 4 double-sheets numbered 2 to 5 (incomplete from the beginning), describing landscapes of China, customs and obligations of Chinese women, and dwelling at some length on literary examinations in China. He writes: "Near the mouth of the Pei-Ho is Ta-Ku, a small town notable only for the meeting of the English plenipotentiaries with the Chinese in 1840, but the nearest village to the sea is Tung-Ku, near which, going up the river, is Siku, notable for a pagoda towering a few cubits above the surrounding terrain []. There are four grades in the literary examinations. The first grade is called sin-tsa or good (blossoming talent) because of the promise it seems to give of the student's future success. The exams are held annually in the district capital in a building built for this sole purpose. They are supervised by the chihien assisted by an officer of the public instruction named hioching and a corrector named kian-yu [] ".
