Joseph JOFFRE, Marshal of France. 5 L.A.S. to his cousin And - Lot 207
Joseph JOFFRE, Marshal of France. 5 L.A.S. to his cousin André. 19 pp. in-8, headed by Marshal Joffre. Louveciennes, Paris and Howald, 1925-1926. Beautiful intimate correspondence of Marshal Joffre, then retired in his chestnut grove of Louveciennes. "The festivities, or rather the ceremonies of July 14, are finally over. We are now at rest, which we can enjoy in complete peace at Louveciennes. This rest is a bit relative, especially for Henriette who is very busy with all the little jobs that involve finishing our house and the continuous improvements to the garden and the park []. You are my only family in Roussillon. The memories of my childhood, of my dear father and my good mother, are now all concentrated on you []. Since my last letter, I made another trip to Cholet where Senator Manceau and Mayor Guérineau had asked me to go and inaugurate a monument to the dead. As in Coutances eight days earlier, I received an enthusiastic welcome; and my visit did a lot of good in this country where the population is very reasonable, after having done its patriotic duty admirably during the war []. The newspapers must have told you that the government has entrusted me with the presidency of the National Committee in charge of the reorganization of our finances. I do not think I will shirk this honor, which is also a responsibility; and we are leaving tomorrow for Paris where my new task awaits me, which I will do my best to accomplish, as you can be sure []. May it be favorable and promise us for the future the great results that our country needs so much []. Here, my family and I are still going strong. My wife is actively occupied with the last improvements to be made to our campaign in Louveciennes, where we will settle at the beginning of June. She is putting up with the fatigue that this is causing her valiantly. As for me, I am excessively busy with the National Committee for Voluntary Contributions. Moreover, I have to leave on Saturday, May 22, for Metz where I will meet with the President of the Republic and from where I will continue my trip to the Rhineland until June 1 []. Here I had to interrupt my letter. A nasal hemorrhage immobilized me completely for 24 hours []. I had to cancel my trip to Metz by a telegram. As for my trip to Rivesaltes, it is even more impossible for me to undertake it now []. I go to Paris almost every day. I have no shortage of things to do there. My wife and Germaine often accompany me there to take care of their toilet and their personal affairs and we are happy when we return to Louveciennes to breathe a purer air than that of Paris, which is always stunk by the smells of the cars. We also try not to think too much about the political and financial situation which is really worrying and which gives us a lot of concern [] ".
