RHONE. - [Floods of 1848]. Manuscript of 2 ½ pp. in-4, [1848]. Interesting manuscript on the 1848 floods in Lyon, written in diary form between October 29 and November 5, 1848. "The 31st. The Rhone is still very high; houses are still collapsing, the number of which is estimated from Charpennes to Guillotière: 160 []. A great number of houses collapsed in the suburb of Vaise []. The waterfalls of the Port Charlet and Champier streets have taken on an appalling volume, the entire quay has been swept away, a house at the corner of the quay has its foundations uncovered, an enormous abyss has opened up in front of it and the water rushing in destroys the entire quay []". - Jean COCTEAU.
