HAUTES-PYRÉNÉES. Set of handwritten notes, from the same han - Lot 135
HAUTES-PYRÉNÉES. Set of handwritten notes, from the same hand, dated from August 2 to September 26, 1833. 45 pp. in-8 and 29 pp. in-12 (including a small notebook of 20 pages illustrated with about ten pen-and-ink sketches). Relation of a trip made in 1833 through the Pyrenees, passing by the lake of Gaube, the cave of Gèdre, the waterfall of Saussa and up to the cirque of Gavarnie. With picturesque descriptions of the crossed landscapes, illustrated with sketches, with climbing of some summits. "[] Soon one arrives towards the big snow valley and one reaches the upper part. One distinguishes seven ice senelhes. It is then a question of going up towards the wall by climbing a slope of snow of 45° of inclination. We arm ourselves with crampons. Arrived in front of the breach, one believes to be able to pass of full foot, but it is necessary to turn a broad ditch which is interposed between it and the traveller, to gain one of the sides of the door and by clinging to one of its walls to use all the address of the mountaineers to slip [] ". One of the notes is entitled: "From Barège to Pierrefitte and Cauteretz", another "Excursion to the lake of Gaube", etc. A set of notes taken by this same traveler when he crossed Bordeaux and Aquitaine (approx. 28 pp. in-8 and in-12) is attached.
