LOIRE. Handwritten notes (12 pp. in-8) accompanied... - Lot 118 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
LOIRE. Handwritten notes (12 pp. in-8) accompanied by 3 sheets of ink drawings, [1831]. Interesting notes on the railroad from Andrézieux to Roanne, the third line built in France, starting in 1827 and put into service in 1833. Technical considerations, with figures, in particular on the problems related to the inclined planes and the solutions implemented. The first entitled "Chemin de fer d'Andrézieux à Roanne à deux voies" (Railway from Andrézieux to Roanne with two tracks), the second "extract from the notes collected by Mr. Cormetat on the three railroads from Lyon to St Etienne, from St Etienne to Andrézieux and from Andrézieux to Roanne, during the visit he made from Sept. 27 to Oct. 5, 1831. "The inclined plane descending to put in communication in Andrézieux itself the way of Andrézieux to Roanne with that of St Et. to Andr. long. 857 slope by m. 0,0415. Mr. Mallet and Mr. Henry would have liked to avoid this inclined plane, by establishing the communication of their way with that of Mr. Beaumier above Andrézieux, but the latter was opposed to it []. To serve the 2 inclined planes of Rousin which are separated by a part of level 628, it will be necessary a cable of 10 000 meters length. The wrought iron rails are similar to those from Lyon to St Et. Improvement in the shape of the collar that receives the rails, one of its surfaces is inclined to the other so that the wooden pin intended to secure the rails in the pad necessarily has the shape of a wedge []. The engineering works of this railroad appear to be well executed. They are much better than those of the Lyon to St Etienne railway []. The wagons which have the shape shown in figure (1), have cast iron wheels. They rotate with the axle which is fixed to the hub. The hub is divided into 3 sections contained by an iron rod. In this small gap that exists, are introduced small wedges so that the expansion does not break the spokes of the wheel. To prevent the rims of wheels with a rim from wearing out too quickly, they are soaked by casting them in a sand mold []". All this is accompanied by technical sketches (sections with dimensions).
