DORDOGNE. Abbot PETIT, parish priest of Saint-Julien... - Lot 46 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
DORDOGNE. Abbot PETIT, parish priest of Saint-Julien church in Château-l'Évêque. 2 L.A.S. and 1 P.A., addressed to Alexis de Gourgues. 13 pp. in-8, headers of the church Saint-Julien de Château-l'Évêque. Long and very interesting letters, in particular on the ordination of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul at Château-l'Évêque. [In 1865, Father Petit had discovered, in his presbytery, old documents relating the priestly ordination of Vincent de Paul, which took place in this church on September 23, 1600; the discovered papers were authenticated and the bishopric gave them to the congregation of the mission. The Superior General of the Lazarist Order then decided to create a house on the site and the Daughters of Charity moved there in 1869.] He develops his long letters around 3 questions: "1° Ordination of St. Vincent de Paul at Château-l'Évêque 2° Religious origin of Ch. l'Évêque 3° Origin and history of Ch. l'Évêque". "These letters, when compared with our parish registers, establish to the point of evidence that this holy priest received the priestly anointing in the Church of St. Julien de Ch. l'Évêque on the 23rd of February 1600, from the hands of Bishop François de Bourdeilles. I believe, sir, that it will please you to send you a faithful copy of these letters [document attached]. You will read there, yourself, throughout, the name of my church. It is necessary to tell you that our registers relate to each act and constantly since 1600 until 1793, the formula registered in the title. It is the perfect identity. Furthermore, please note this: the secretary of the prelate who consecrated the church and countersigned the Latin letters left his signature several times in our registers at the time of the ceremony. It is a witness of the past that survives and defies all equivocation. Besides, no rival church in France has ever claimed the glory of the fact of the ordination and I have found nowhere, in spite of my numerous researches, any contradiction [] ". He points out the errors of the researchers, etc.
