Jacques Étienne GAY (1786-1864), Swiss botanist. L.A.S.... - Lot 34 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Jacques Étienne GAY (1786-1864), Swiss botanist. L.A.S. to Charles Des Moulins. 2 pp. in-8. [April 1848]. At the top of the letter, Charles Des Moulins indicated: "continuation of the letter of Mr Gay of April 15, 1848, letter of which the 1st leaf is in my herbarium, folder of allium palleus". He resumes his correspondence interrupted since one year. "My friend, you will have my Ergugium when you want, with the two or three other plants that I named above". He invites him to come to rue de Vaugirard, evokes the Revolution of 1848 and its consequences on his activity and his life. "While waiting for this question, vital for me and my child, to be resolved, I will be on the streets with five or six months of food and with 1800 francs of income which summarize the savings of my whole life and which are placed in public funds [] ". For he is going to be chased out of the apartment he occupies and wonders where he will be able to house all his voluminous collections (600 packages of plants, more than 1500 volumes of botany). "According to all appearances, I will empty the place of my person with my furniture, leaving my collections in place, with the option for citizen Louis Blanc to have them thrown in the dunghill, if the place they occupy is absolutely necessary. I will take care, however, that he be informed by a certificate of competent people, that there is there a work of fifty years, and that they are precious collections, even from the point of view of the French interest. It remains to be seen whether he will understand this scientific interest better than he understands the interest of industrial workers [] ".
