Etienne GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1772-1844), naturalist. - Lot 12
Etienne GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1772-1844), naturalist. Autograph note (1 p. in-12 oblong) in the margin of a printed booklet from his library, entitled " Coup d'oeil sur la Flore des Iles Canaries. Translated from the German by M. Léopold de Buch". [1834]. Stapled booklet of 56 pp. in-8, mute cover of fine green paper. Uncut notebooks and untrimmed margins. Study of Léopold de Buch, containing a catalog of the plants he discovered and studied during his stay in the Canaries. Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire completes this work by attaching (sewn to the back cover) an autograph note dedicated to avocados and their cultivation in Tenerife: "In La Laguna, the ancient capital of Tenerife, the Laurus persea tree was cultivated, which has since been called Persea gratissima, the avocado tree, the avocado fruit so named []. The berry forms a pulpy sarcophagus that is eaten, but in Teneriffe the envelope is attached and united with the seed as in the laurus and the tree takes in this country the varied state that it had excluded from its family. Consult the plants [] in the work of Candolle" [Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle]. On the cover, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire wrote: "Puissance des mondes ambiants. Read on Sept. 22, 1834&". He refers to a memoir devoted to the influence of external agents on plants, "Puissance des mondes ambiants gouvernant l'engendrement des causes auxquelles se rapportant les formes différentes et la multiplicité des espèces végétales" [Power of the ambient worlds governing the engendering of the causes to which the different forms and the multiplicity of plant species relate], which he read in front of the Academy.
