Jean-François COSTE (1741-1819), French military... - Lot 6 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Jean-François COSTE (1741-1819), French military physician and botanist, and great promoter of rhubarb. L.A.S. Paris, 19 September 1792. 3 pp. small in-4. Letter about his action to impose the cultivation of rhubarb in France, with the help of Parmentier. "It is nearly three months since the documents relative to my rhubarb plantation were given, by the office, to Mr. Parmentier [his main supporter, the famous Antoine Augustin Parmentier (1737-1813), promoter of the potato]. The latter, overloaded with work as well as his collaborators, was unable to process the said documents. Coste complains about these interminable delays: "I am probably the dean of the patients under all possible administrations, whereas I am perhaps the one whose object is the most essential []". He claims compensation for "such a useful enterprise, and whose complete success is no longer equivocal" and the attentions that his fight deserves.
