BOSSUET Jacques Bénigne. SERMON FOR THE PROFESSION... - Lot 106 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
BOSSUET Jacques Bénigne. SERMON FOR THE PROFESSION OF Mme DE LA VALLIÈRE. Duchess of Vaujour. Paris : En l'imprimerie Royale, 1676 [ca. 1930]. One volume, large in-8, full black calf binding. Smooth spine with the title calligraphed in red; framed with mosaic flowers in several colors on the top of the first cover covered with a reptile-like paper, second cover dressed with a paper evoking the one of the first cover in yellow and red, cover preserved, gilt head, not trimmed. Case with leather edges. Illustrated with 10 very free color plates. Numbered edition limited to 90 copies. One of the 80 (n° 39) on Arches. The last leaf includes a handwritten justification indicating an edition of 90 copies, of which 10 on japon and 80 on Arches. This indication seems quite fanciful. The edition thus illustrated is indeed not cited in any bibliography. Reprint made in the 30's of this famous sermon of Bossuet. A very rare copy, including 10 original free etchings in colors on laid paper, outside the text, in the style of John Arden's engravings. They illustrate each one a passage of the sermon, mentioned in the "Order of the engravings" which is at the head of the work, except the first 2 representing a woman's sex and a man's sex in erection, supposed to represent the portraits of Madame de La Vallière and King Louis XIV.
