Eugène Paul known as GEN-PAUL (1895-1975). Violinist. Oil... - Lot 255 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Eugène Paul known as GEN-PAUL (1895-1975). Violinist. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 92 x 65 cm. Old canvas. A certificate of Maurice Combe, director of the Galerie de la Présidence, dated March 15, 1972 will be given to the buyer. The Galerie de la Présidence dates the work to 1936. Born in the effervescent district of Montmartre to a mother who was an embroiderer and a father who was a cabaret musician, Gen-Paul's artistic life was marked by several tragedies. The death of his father, when he was only ten years old, and above all the outbreak of the war, which marked him in body and mind. Although he was influenced by artists from Montmartre such as Vlaminck, Gen-Paul's real artistic shock was to be found in the past. Indeed, it was the Spanish masters, and more particularly Goya and El Greco, that were to upset him. He drew from them a passionate and expressive painting. This violinist joins one of the themes often exploited by the artist, that of the musicians. It is for him the opportunity to render the vibrant rhythm of the game. The material is thick and generous, the gesture lively, the palette bright. Everything contributes to this expressionism of movement that will make his success.
