Baron d'Arlincourt. L.A.S. to his uncle (Marichon... - Lot 339 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Baron d'Arlincourt. L.A.S. to his uncle (Marichon de Marcq). "From the imperial district at Vitepsk in Russia this 28th August 1812. 3 pp. in-4. Campaign of Russia. "My hasty departure from Naples for the Great Army six weeks ago prevented me from giving you any news of me. And at the same time to announce to you a piece of news which will undoubtedly please you, since it is happy for me, is that His Majesty the King [of Naples, Murat], in calling me to the army, has deigned to appoint me his aide-de-camp. In the various matters that have just taken place, I have been very happy, but especially in the matters of the 26th and 27th of last month [Battle of Vitebsk] which preceded our entry into the town of Vitebsk from where I am writing to you. I had my horse killed beneath me and two bullets, one of which went through my hat and the other through my coat. As you can see, I got off cheaply; but also the reward was worth the risk I took since H.M. the Emperor and King, as a result of these affairs, has deigned to make me a Knight of the Legion of Honour. I confess that I desired nothing as much as this honourable and brilliant decoration! []. I have just learned that it is the intention of His Majesty the King that I go to Naples with dispatches for Her Majesty the Queen...". He sends his letter to her through Mr. de La Montagne. Attached are two letters from M. de La Montagne to Marichon de Marcq (Nov. 1812) concerning the exchange of letters, giving news of the return of Baron d'Arlincourt from Russia.
