Claude-François Fraguier (1666-1728), writer... - Lot 332 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Claude-François Fraguier (1666-1728), writer and translator, member of the French Academy, he was a friend of Huet, Mme de La Fayette and Ninon de Lenclos. L.A.S. "Vale" to Abbé d'Olivet. Paris, February 3, 1718. 2 pp. in-4. Small, non-gravity wetness at the bottom of the document. Very rare letter from Fraguier (Raoul Bonnet in his Isographie de l'Académie française only listed two), with parts in Latin and Greek. He transcribes some of Cicero's sentences and comments on them. "This is how Lambin [the humanist Denis Lambin (1516-1572)] wants us to read this place. Here is the reason he gives in his note []. I have only a Diog at hand. Laerce de Froben, all Greek. Thus I cannot tell you what Casaubon or Ménage may have said to reconcile Cicero with himself []. That, my dear abbot, is what comes to me at once. It could be very elaborate, but intelligenti pauca. As I have not yet found anyone who knows the Abbot de Beaulieu, I have not been able to tell you anything about it []. I will tell the Abbot. Gédoyn [the academician Nicolas Gédoyn (1677-1744)] what you order me to tell him []". Attached is a manuscript of 11 pp. in-4, in Latin and in verse, with corrections by another hand in the margin, and several mentions "Fraguier oenigma aurora", "Fraguier oenigma lacrima" and "Fraguier oenigma sommium".
