[Zachary Pearce (1690-1774), English bishop and writer, translator of Cicero and defender of Milton]. Autograph manuscript (1 p. in-4) and autograph fragment of a letter (2 pp. ½ in-8), in the hand of Abbé d'Olivet, preserved in a folder entitled "Pearce's Letters". - Manuscript of a tribute to Pearce, in Latin: "Laudavi antehac neque immerito in praefatione singularem Pearcei eruditionem, animadversionibus in libros de Oratore inque Longinum jamdiu publice constestatam. Comperi [post paulum] deinceps in eo doctrinæ præstantiam pari esse humanitate, communis literarum boni studio, candore conjunctam. Qui cum audisset de Cicerone quid molirer, primum quæcumque fuerat variis temporibus in Philosophica commentatus, ultro mihi propenseque obtulit ... unde huic editioni pretium et singulare decus accedat []". Translation: "I have praised before and quite rightly in the preface the exceptional erudition of Pearce, attested publicly for a long time by his remarks on the Speaker and on Longin. I discovered [shortly afterwards] that in him superiority of knowledge was mixed with equal politeness, equal passion for the common good of literature, and equal kindness. For having learned of my project concerning Cicero, he immediately and spontaneously offered me all his comments written at various times on his philosophical work [...] so that this edition might be singularly honored and gratified [...].
