Abbot d'Olivet. Autograph manuscript, "First... - Lot 318 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Abbot d'Olivet. Autograph manuscript, "First draft" with numerous corrections. 10 pp. in-folio. (Incomplete) manuscript of the translation of a tragedy by Sophocles. Only folios 4, 5, 9 and 10 are included, as well as an introductory leaf: "Places susceptible of several meanings". "« A. There are several places in this Tragedy whose true meaning is almost impossible to determine. The Greek Scholastics do not agree with each other []. In my translation, I have always determined for the meaning that seemed to me to be the best; and in my notes, I have often suggested the different meanings of the other interpreters, ancient or modern. The reader will judge for or against, according to his or her own insights []. The enemies of the ancients will not fail to insult us. They will say that we often admire what we do not hear []". We enclose the autograph manuscript (draft with many corrections, passages crossed out and rewritten in the margins) of two sermons on temptation. Booklet of 58 pp. in-8.
