Abbot d'Olivet. Manuscript with autograph... - Lot 316 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Abbot d'Olivet. Manuscript with autograph additions, Le Songe de Scipion, translated into French with remarks. [1732]. Notebook of 21 pp. in-4. Wetness affecting the bottom of the pages. Manuscript of this text published in 1732, with a correction on the first page. It is followed by the draft of the Avertissement de la main de l'abbé d'Olivet (with corrections and crossed out passage). "One hardly seeks in this book the graces of its Latinity, and the ingenious tricks of its eloquence. But our true interests must teach us to put a Philosopher above the grammarian and the orator, a Philosopher capable of enlightening our reason and giving us a taste for moral virtues []. I repeat, let us look here for the Philosopher, and consider that Cicero is the one of all the Ancients, whose reading opens the mind the most, and can be most useful in making honest people []".
