Ottoman Empire. Papers of the Gravier family, merchants settled in Constantinople [Nicolas Gravier, a merchant from Marseille settled there at the end of the 18th century]. 24 documents from the 19th century. Exhibit signed by Nicolas Gravier (Galata 1801) mentioning his arrest by the Turks in October 1798 and the confiscation of all his goods by the Ottoman government; invoice from the Marseille shipowner of the bombard "La Victoire" for the voyage to Constantinople (1825) of his nephew Joseph Gravier; letter to his nephew Joseph who came to join him in Constantinople; inventory and estimate "in Turkish monnoie and monnoie de France" of the jewellery and furniture of Joseph's future wife (Galata-les-Constantinople, 1826, 3 pp. grand in-folio); invoices for purchases made on his behalf (1835); several letters addressed to Joseph, Nicolas and Joachim Gravier in Galata by family members or merchants (1819-1847, including two from England with postmarks); letter from Joseph Gravier announcing that he had found a relic of the Cross of Christ and giving its history; court decision relating to the sinking of the ship belonging to Alfred Gravier "La Ville de Brest" in the port of Marseille, letter from Casimir Gravier to the ambassador of the Ottoman Gate on the claim of Prince Kémal Eddin Effendi son of Abdul Medjid, etc. as well as the account of the first part of his journey from Bordeaux to Constantinople through the Canal du Midi (1819, 3 pp. in-folio). About fifteen letters and notes from 20th century genealogical research on the Gravier family are attached (letters from the General Armorial of France and the "cabinet de l'historiographe", family tree, etc.).
