Archaeology Greece. File of Henry Convert... - Lot 214 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Archaeology Greece. File of Henry Convert (born in Troyes in 1861), seconded to the Hellenic service of the French mission, who was in charge of the excavations in Delphi. - About 25 letters and cards addressed to Henry Convert (some to his wife), mainly from archaeologists and diplomats, Maurice Holleaux, Théophile Homolle (director of the Louvre Museum), Félix Sartiaux (from Syra), the director of the French mission in Greece, letters written from Athens, Salonika, Skopje, Mykonos, some in Greek, with also a photograph of the entire staff signed by the various members, as well as about ten business cards (including Clemenceau), some autographs. Let us quote one of Maurice Holleaux's letters (3 pp. in-8, letterhead of the French School of Athens), on the excavations of Delphi and Clemenceau's impatience. "Clemenceau is unhappy that nothing is found, which is natural. As his dispatch also indicates, he wants the search to continue. I therefore applaud myself for asking you to be patient again, even though your installation there is very uncomfortable. Our big boss must not think that we have fished out of discouragement or negligence; in the letter, he states that he saw two piles of rocks with his own eyes. He must be persuaded, piece by piece, that he made a mistake. I do indeed want you to continue the surveys at least until Mrs. Jacquemart passes by []. I shall go to her at once and try to persuade her to take the road to Delphi as soon as possible []. Have until then a brave patience. I have told the President that all the isolated rocks will be scraped down to the virgin soil or to the outcropping rock, and I think that is the method to be followed. It is laborious, but it will allow us to have no remorse and no worries. I believe that the work under the Sotiriadis road may be next.
