America (discovery of). Manuscript of 70... - Lot 204 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
America (discovery of). Manuscript of 70 pp. large in-4 (30 x 24 cm), with some corrections, in a paperback notebook. Titled " History of Geography " on the front page. Beginning of the 19th century (about 1810-1820). Several chapters: History of Geography - Geography of the Hebrews - Geography of Homer - Travel and knowledge of Herodotus from 3500 to 3570 - Alexander's expedition, Pytheas' journey, systems of Eratosthenes and Hipparchus, research of Polybius and Possidonius, voyage of Eudoxe, geography of Strabon Discoveries in Asia, voyage of the Eritrean Sea Marine of Tyre and Ptolemy Discoveries and geographical works of the Arabs from 700 to 1400 Travels and discoveries of the Normans or Scandinavians. First discovery of America 800-1380. The last chapter is thus devoted to the discovery of America by Icelandic navigators in the 11th century, places which they named Helleland, Marckland, Vinland. And the author concludes, after reporting their accounts: "One cannot look for Vinland anywhere else than on the coasts of North America. This part of the world had been discovered five centuries before Columbus. He also recounts other voyages and concludes again: "The land of Drogee would be Nova Scotia and New England. By bringing together all this series of research under one point of view - the research and discoveries of the Scandinavians in the 10th and 11th centuries, and the journeys of the Zeni brothers in the 14th century - we will remain convinced that the New World was visited by the peoples of the N. as early as the year 1000".
