Massimiliano Spinola (1780-1857), Italian... - Lot 52 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Massimiliano Spinola (1780-1857), Italian entomologist; he gathered a very important collection of insects, and made many contributions to entomology by naming and describing many species; he was a member of the Entomological Society of London from its creation in 1836. L.A.S. to Gustave Silbermann, administrator of the Natural History Museum of Strasbourg and editor of the Entomological Review. Genoa, December 8, 1834. 2 pp. in-4. Address on the back with postal marks. On his entomological work and collections. He addresses a notice and a drawing "with details of a beetle that I believe unpublished []" and offers to publish it. "I have in my portfolio some rather advanced works on Buprestides and Elatérides" which he also proposes to publish in the Entomological Review. "The increase of my beetle collection is also particularly dear to my heart. I provide for it by buying from dealers and by exchanges with amateurs. But since I no longer hunt on my own, my stores have long been out of stock and I have very few insects to offer them. My stores of marine animals preserved in the spirit of wine are less poor at the moment, and I am able to offer you a choice of invertebrates quite rare and in very good condition. If it would be suitable for the Natural History Museum of Strasbourg, I would gladly exchange it with native or exotic beetles [] ".
