DRIEU LA ROCHELLE, Pierre. Signed autograph manuscript, enti - Lot 104
DRIEU LA ROCHELLE, Pierre. Signed autograph manuscript, entitled "Je reviens à vous, hommes". June 1918. 3 pp. large folio. Black ink on laid paper watermarked "Duke of Lorraine 1498" with coat of arms. Very beautiful text on war and love, published in La Revue de Hollande, n° 6, in June 1918. "I come back to you, men, that the war holds there grabbed by the kidneys, turned away from cities populated by women. I come to you, and yet you do not wait for me and you do not receive me with love. But when I meet you in the city, I cannot bear that in your eyes your glances come to me from so far away and that they cannot reach me and that we are now separated by dead spaces where love is lost and succumbs. So much time has passed since my sorrow, since my unforgettable sorrow among you. I am no longer with you, I am with all of you, who are all the others, who are all those who do not know how to love you. I love you and as long as I cannot hold on to it. All joys dissolve in my lips, souls, fingers []. I am moving again towards this slaughter, leaving behind me my security? and my peaceful enjoyment to love you, to sympathize with you, so that you love me, bitter warriors devoted to the obligatory sacrifice. You will scorn my return as you scorn my absence. But one day, having climbed together through the hollow tracks at the lines where death is circumscribed for a long cycle of seasons, having killed together, we will have become again the fierce brothers, mortals united against nothingness". Drieu adds, at the end of the manuscript " Copied for Bolette Natanson in June 1918 ". Attached is a fragment of Drieu's autograph manuscript, taken from Fond de Cantine and dated June 1918. ½ p. in-folio; numbered "3" at the top. A few variants from the printed text. Folds and creases. "Modesty of the athletic body which is satisfied with its perfection. You could limit your human requirement to fill with a muscle strict to your form. The virgin curve of a
