CHAMFORT, Sébastien-Roch Nicolas de (1741-1794),... - Lot 22 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
CHAMFORT, Sébastien-Roch Nicolas de (1741-1794), poet and moralist. Autograph manuscript, 1 p. 1/3 in-16. Spiritual moral anecdote. "Mylord Halifax played and held the bank, at a huge price. A wager of two million is offered. He won't take it. One of the assertants told him Mylord held I'm half. Mylord gambles and loses. He turns to his associate who says Mylord, I'm a wretch and turning to the floor, you'll agree, gentlemen, that if Mylord had won, my fortune would have been made. It's only fair that I should be punished, and being only a rascal, I'm a rogue and I'm a butt to the pikes. The pleasant thing was that no one said a word to him and he went away without being caught.
