Leon CAUVY (1874-1933). Pastry seller in... - Lot 660 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Leon CAUVY (1874-1933). Pastry seller in the oriental market, 1922. Watercolor gouache on paper. Signed and dated lower right. 45 x 53 cm at sight. Léon Cauvy is a major figure of orientalist painting. Trained at the Beaux-Arts of Montpellier, his native city, he quickly distinguished himself and obtained several awards. The most important one is surely the one that allows him to go to the brand new Villa Abd-el Tif, equivalent to the Villa Médicis, created in 1907 by Léonce Bénédite. The first winner of this prize, Cauvy will never stop promoting Orientalist painting both through his painting and through teaching, since he will be director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Algiers. This oriental market scene has all the characteristics of Cauvy's painting, a flattened subject, a bright and luminous palette making him a great colorist influenced by Louis Valtat and especially by the Anglo-Welsh painter Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956).
