Georges Auric. 3 L.A.S. at Bolette Natanson.... - Lot 352 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Georges Auric. 3 L.A.S. at Bolette Natanson. S.l.n.d. (circa 1916-1918), 8 pp. in-8. Very beautiful letters from Auric mobilised during the First World War (27th Company, 3rd Unit 1st Section). He describes the "Theatre of War", a battle, a cannon "that kills God in the heart of France and sanctifies Germany", the innocents and adds "we love more than ever France that can bear this and the world that lives this, with the small and great daily dramas of life, the great misery of gold, love and glory. What madness. What tumults in this brain of the globe where I don't know what is bubbling [] I am waiting for the gunshot, the trench where one dies []". Amusing and eccentric letters, he evokes the Salpêtrière (where he stayed), a rendezvous at the cinema, their acquaintances, a hypothetical invitation that he would want without artists and adds "people disgust me [] I would like to press a button and destroy humanity. Then we'll be at peace and I'll tell you the truth about Art and the truth about all the things you believe in", he ironizes about friendship, evokes his neuroses, and concludes: "believe that I'm lucid all the same, and basically a guy who's not much of a boor []".
