Massimiliano Spinola (1780-1857), Italian... - Lot 54 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Massimiliano Spinola (1780-1857), Italian entomologist; he gathered a very important collection of insects, and made important contributions to entomology by naming and describing many species; he was a member of the Entomological Society of London since its creation in 1836. 2 L.A.S. to the entomologist Lucien Buquet (1807-1889). Genoa, February June 1835. 2 pp. ½ in-4. An address on the back with postmarks. Nice letters on the constitution of his insect collection. The first concerns the sending of insects from Mexico, of which he gives a list. The second, much denser, ends with a very long list of insects: "These are the Buprestides of Cat. Dej.'s Buprestides that I have collected. If you could in any way help to increase the number of my materials, you would find me ready to contribute the equivalent either in cash or in exchange. For the latter, I will offer at this time some Sardinian beetles and apennius beetles which are rare in other places, but having few copies, I invite you not to wait too long []". He also sends him an article on Buprestides to be inserted in his magazine, and is waiting for ancylochians from the United States. "Mr Dupont sent me under the name of Macrupis voridis Des. Cat. a species I believe to be the other sex of my macr. Caleatara. Mr. de Cristofi accommodated himself to my collection of invertebrates and gave me partly and partly promised in exchange many insects of different orders [] ".
