Francis DARWIN (1848-1925), botaniste, fils de Charles (il fut son secrétaire de 1874 à 1882). Lettre autographe signée au botaniste Gaetano Durando (1811-1892), à Alger. 4 pp. in-8. Down, Beckenham, Kent, 1er avril 1879. Intéressante lettre sur une nouvelle variété de trèfle trouvée dans les environs d'Alger, illustrée du croquis. « While I was in Algiers, I found a clover which resembles I resapinatum & to a certain extent I fimbriatum in respect to a remarkable quality of the leaves. Th « bloom » (wachs über zap of the Germans) is not symmetriccally disposed on the under surface of the lateral leaflets. The bloom is absent [croquis] on theposterior halves of the lateral leaflets (under surface) ». Il décrit le trèfle en question. « This property seems to be in a variable or rudimentary condition in the algerian clover & for that reason my father is anxious to raise seedlings of it. I send you a leaf or two of the plant. I gathered near the boltom of a rocky little valley leading down from the cemetery & the telegraph hill toward the road, which lead to the Jardin d'Essai. Unfortunately I did not press it but only allowed it to dry so that it is a very bad specimen, but if you are able to recognize it, my father would be very much obliged if you could let him know its name ; and also when it is in fruit if you would kindly let him have a few seeds of it […]. My short visit in Algiers seems like a little oasis in time instead of in space […] ».
