Émile BOUDIER (1828-1920), mycologist from Montmorency, one - Lot 22
Émile BOUDIER (1828-1920), mycologist from Montmorency, one of the world's leading mushroom specialists, co-founder of the Société Mycologique de France, he published Icones mycologicae, an atlas of 600 plates in 6 volumes. 10 autograph letters and cards signed to Huyot, mycologist at Lagny-sur-Marne. 18 pp. in-8 and in-12. Montmorency, 1887-1908. Correspondence entirely devoted to mushrooms, their harvesting, determination and cultivation. "I received from you, I believe the day before yesterday, a small box containing Tricholomus nudum obtained from your cultures. This is further proof that it may well be possible to cultivate more edible species than is generally the case. Either by mycelium or by sowing spores, we could grow a host of edible species in cellars. I myself was able to obtain a fine growth of chanterelle mycelium on the floor of my cellar (in 1870) by watering the soil with a solution of potassium nitrate and throwing in peelings of these mushrooms. The war prevented me from knowing the final results, but I'm convinced that I would have succeeded in producing them. I believe that mycelium planted in these conditions, or soil harvested from the base of any mushroom, is more successful than sowing spores [...]".
