CHINA, Qianlong period, 18th century Carved cinnabar lacquer box, square form with lobed corners, the lid with black background lined with geometrical motifs, adorned with two five-clawed dragons, standing on their hind legs, above the five sacred peaks emerging from the water, heads turned towards the center, where the sacred pearl containing the stylized Shou character (longevity) is surrounded by clouds evoking lingzhi, the mushroom of longevity, the scene highlighted by two friezes, Greek and lotus petals; the sides decorated with auspicious motifs among ribbons and clouds in poly-lobed cartouches, alternating with precious objects at the corners, on a black and yellow honeycomb background; the heel underlined by a Greek, the interior and base black lacquered. On the reverse of the lid, the inscription in four gold-lacquered characters: Yanshou baohe ???? "treasure box of longevity". On the base, a six-character gold lacquered mark Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi ?????? (A few lacquer gaps around the edges and in the decoration, a few small chips on the edges, a few cracks near the inscriptions, minor lacquer retouching). Dim. 18 x 18 x 7.5 cm Provenance: This box was brought back from China around 1885 by the current owner's grandfather. Note: This type of box was probably offered as a birthday gift, as the inscription on the reverse of the lid would attest. (Some missing lacquer parts around the rims and in the decor, tiny chips, small cracks near the inscriptions, small lacquer repairs).
