Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Large box, in red tsuishu lacquer, with hinged lid, with five lobes evoking a cherry blossom, the lid decorated in light relief with chrysanthemum flowers and foliage, and enhanced with two gold lacquered fan-shaped cartouches, decorated with irises and chrysanthemums applied in bone relief, one of the fans signed Gyokuzan in a small mother-of-pearl cartouche; the sides in red lacquered basketwork, the interior and base, black lacquered. (The fans are painted in gold; the hinges are damaged, one needs to be reattached; the edges are worn; the key is missing). H. 10 cm - L. max : 26 cm
