Jan van HUCHTENBURG (1647-1733) - Lot 214
Jan van HUCHTENBURG (1647-1733) Cavalry clash, a burning fort in the distance Oil on canvas (two canvases sewn together, restoration along the seam) 158.3 x 205 cm Signed lower right: "JVHuchtenburg". Jan van Huchtenburg began his apprenticeship with Thomas Wijk, and was influenced in his early years by Nicolaes Berchem and Philips Wouwerman, before joining his brother Jacob in Rome. He specialized in depicting cavalry battles and battle scenes. By 1667, Huchtenburg was in Paris, working at the Manufacture des Gobelins under Le Brun and Van der Meulen. He returned to Haarlem around 1670. By comparing our painting with other signed and dated works by the artist (Combat de cavalerie, 1673, Dijon, Musée de Beaux-Arts, Inv.T.53), we can situate this important composition from the 1670s, when the painter reached a certain maturity. His style broke away from Nordic influence, and is characterized by spare, linear compositions bathed in Italianate light. A less ambitious composition of similar motifs, with a rock on the right and a breakaway on the left, is preserved in Stockholm's Nationalmuseum (Inv. NM 289). In the early 18th century, clients such as Prince Eugène de Savoie Carignan and Prince Elector of the Palatinate Jean-Guillaume de Neubourg-Wittelsbach ensured his work's presence in numerous public collections throughout Europe.
