Flemish school of the late 16th century, entourage of Jacob de BACKER The Judgment of Midas Oil on oak panel with parquet (two boards, cracks, restorations) 72.6 x 92.7 cm This work derives from a composition by Jacob de Backer, of which several copies are known, one of which seems to be considered autograph (private collection; oil on copper, 35 x 43 cm; reproduced in the Breughel-Brueghel exhibition catalog, Antwerp, 1998, p. 212). Other versions have recently come up for sale (Christie's London, April 9, 2003, lot 69, as "Ecole de Fontainebleau"; Christie's London, December 7, 2018 lot 118; Artcurial Paris, January 20, 2016, lot 489).
