Théodore LACORDAIRE (1801-1870), entomologist. - Lot 32
Théodore LACORDAIRE (1801-1870), entomologist. Autograph letter signed to entomologist and botanist Léon Dufour (1780-1865). 2 pp. ½ in-8. Liège, March 21, 1855. He renounces his candidacy for the entomology chair at the Muséum. He says he is very touched that Léon Dufour has thought of him for the entomology chair at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle in Paris. "Seconded by you and a few friends I have on the spot, perhaps I'd have some chance of succeeding. But for material reasons, which I'm sure you'll understand, I can't get into the running. I don't have a fortune, which is the usual case for us naturalists [...]". He explains at length the reasons for this, both personal and scientific, having lived in Belgium for twenty years. "At last I'm in a better position to work than in Paris itself. Placed, as we are, between France, Germany and England, we know at this very moment everything that is happening there in the field of science [...]. I therefore wish Messrs Blanchard and Guérin-Méneville good luck; they have no competition to fear from us [...]". Finally, he concludes by giving him news of the memoir on the Belostoma that he is having printed by his company, and which is taking a long time to come off the presses.
