Edme-Louis DAUBENTON (1730-1785), naturalist, guard and sous - Lot 13
Edme-Louis DAUBENTON (1730-1785), naturalist, guard and sous-démonstrateur of the Cabinet du Roi; cousin of Louis Daubenton, Buffon hired him to supervise the edition of the illuminated plates of Histoire naturelle. Autograph letter signed to M. Cascastel, Narbonne. 2 pp. in-4, "Au Jardin du Roy", December 17, 1779. Address on spine with armorial red wax seal. Smudging affecting the upper half of the letter. A bird for the King's cabinet. "I received the day before yesterday the bird you were kind enough to send to M. d'Ogny for the Cabinet du Roy; M. de Buffon apparently did not recognize this bird from the description given to him by your son, since he asked him to send it to him, as this bird is not rare, it is in the Cabinet. It is true that there are provinces in France where it is not found [...]. I shall hasten to inform M. de Buffon of it the first time I have the honor of writing to him [...]". Rare.
