CALVADOS. Georges BAYEUX (Caen 1752-1792), first finance cle - Lot 171
CALVADOS. Georges BAYEUX (Caen 1752-1792), first finance clerk under Necker, public prosecutor for Calvados during the French Revolution, massacred by a mob on September 6, 1792. Autograph letter signed, 6 pp. in-4. Sunday, May 9 [1790]. Important letter on the primary assemblies in Lisieux and Calvados. "I have received a deputation from the municipality of Lisieux. It requests: 1° three primary assemblies of the town's citizens, given that its population is over 12,000 souls. 2° it does not want the countryside to compete with the town's citizens. I have noticed a great deal of stiffness and obstinacy in these claims [...]". He describes at length the situation, the problems raised, and proposes his vision of things. He continues: "I am assured that Pont l'Évêque will have the same difficulties; perhaps it would be a good idea to warn them, if there is still time [...]. All this will delay the department; but I had foreseen it and I have already seen many examples in my life, that too much haste is detrimental to celerity [...]. But I would remind you again that this whole area seems to me to require great care. It is only by argumentation that we depart from the letter of the decree in relation to the town assemblies; the letter alone strikes the majority of minds [...]. The deputation from Lisieux has assured me that a violent storm is feared for tomorrow at Courtonne la Ville; I will be informed tomorrow evening and I will do what prudence and circumstances require [...]". Attached is a L.A.S. from his son Ovide Bayeux, lawyer at the Caen Court of Appeal, to Mr. Perraut, general inspector of law schools, with recommendations from the 4 principal magistrates of Caen in the margin (prairial year 13)
