AISNE. Jean-Claude LEBLANC DE BEAULIEU (1753-1825), bishop of Soissons (1802-1820). 15 signed letters to M. Dubut, honorary canon of Meaux & dean curate of Fère-Champenoise (Marne). 41 pp. in-4. Soissons (mostly), Gentilly and Paris, 1815-1825. Some soiling. Addresses on spine. Interesting correspondence, spanning 10 years until his death. He discusses the affairs of his diocese and of Soissons, his aborted nomination for the archbishopric of Arles, etc. The very first (dated October 22, 1815) recounts the terrible explosion of two gunpowder magazines in the Saint-Rémy bastion in Soissons on October 13, 1815, causing the death of many people, and extensive damage to the seminary and cathedral. "Rest assured on my account, my very dear and respectable friend, I was not ripe for Heaven; so God deigned to leave me on earth, to do penance [...]. No clergyman in holy orders, either from the seminary or from the town, was a victim of our all-too-fateful accident: the same was not true of seven of our seminarians from the minor seminary. Five of them were killed on the spot, two others died within twenty-four hours. Between thirty and forty people from the town perished [...]".
