[NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM]. Jean BECQUEREL. 2 autograph manusc - Lot 133
[NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM]. Jean BECQUEREL. 2 autograph manuscripts, with numerous corrections. 4 and 2 pp. folio. Circa 1908-1910. Manuscript entitled: "Renseignements sur la fondation de la chaire de physique appliquée à l'histoire naturelle (fondée en 1838), et sur le rôle qu'elle a joué depuis cette époque dans le développement des sciences naturelles". Jean Becquerel outlines the history of this chair, held successively by his forebears (Antoine, Edmond and Henri) before he took it up himself, highlighting his own research work. "While H.B. pursued the study of radioactive phenomena, Jean Becquerel, guided by modern ideas and theories, continued the research carried out by his father from 1885 to 1888 on the absorption of light. JB carried out new experiments in the laboratory, and discovered the influence of magnetism on the absorption of light in minerals [...]". The second manuscript is a copy in Jean Becquerel's handwriting of a text by his father Henri (unless he wrote it as if it were his father Henri who had written it...): "[...] In 1878, I replaced my father as assistant to the chair and we continued the work in meteorology and physics of the globe undertaken by my grandfather [...]. In 1891, I succeeded my father and in 1896, guided by the research accumulated in the laboratory over so many years, I discovered with uranium the phenomenon of radioactivity, which today constitutes a special science [...]. Finally, since 1903, my assistant JB [Jean Becquerel] has been carrying out very important work in the laboratory on optical magnetic phenomena in crystals [...]".
