Wolfgang Eugen SCHILZ (1864-1948), German-born South African physicist and chemist; based in Pretoria, he published The Constitution of Matter in 1909. Two signed autograph pieces accompanied by a signed autograph letter, addressed to Henri Becquerel. - Diagram of a ring of 48 carbon and hydrogen atoms. Dated and signed "Pretoria avril 1908" and titled "Reflections on the constitution of matter". 1 p. in-4. - An attempt at atomic classification in tabular form, also titled "Reflections on the constitution of matter", including radium and thorium, dated and signed "April 1908. E. Schiltz". On the back, a spiral diagram for classifying atoms. 1 p. folio on cardboard. - letter (4 pp. ½ in-8. Pretoria, May 5, 1908, with envelope), explaining his theories. "Enclosed I beg to submit to your judgment some reflections on the constitution of matter which much deserved of the attention of the leaving chemists. Following this table of atomic-weights matter seems to consist of different stages of oxidation of 8 primary matters [...]".
