Henri BECQUEREL. Autograph manuscript. 1 p. in-4 (incomplete - Lot 123
Henri BECQUEREL. Autograph manuscript. 1 p. in-4 (incomplete at beginning). No place or date. End of a scientific text involving electric charge, mass and velocity, with mathematical formulae, based on the work of Ernest Rutherford. In ballistic theory, "has as its expression the product (m/e).v; by calculating m/e and v, we could see which of the two factors is altered by the path through the air, or whether they are both altered. The alteration may concern m or v, which must increase, or e, which must decrease. If m is a material mass, this could be increased progressively by snowballing, but such an increase is inconceivable without a decrease in speed; so we can write d(RH)/RH=dm/m+dv/v+de/e. On the other hand, we must admit that the living force can only decrease; if it remained constant, we'd have dm/m+2dv/v=0 [...]. If, therefore, the charge e remained constant, we would have to explain the increase in speed by the effect of an increase in mass. The numbers given on one side by Mr Rutherford in air, and on the other by Mr Descendres in vacuum, indicate an increase in velocity, while the ratio e/m is more or less the same. However, it should be noted that the number given by Mr Rutherford is not the result of a measurement and cannot form a valid term of comparison".
