PHYSICIANS. Edmond BECQUEREL. Set of autograph manuscripts ( - Lot 112
PHYSICIANS. Edmond BECQUEREL. Set of autograph manuscripts (numerous erasures and corrections), forming 56 pp. in-4 and in-folio + 8 pp. in another hand. Very important set, listing and analyzing the works of the various physicists of his time who contributed most to the advancement of the physical sciences (Delarive, Dove, Grove, Jacoby, Henry, Joule, Kirchoff, Plucker, Magnus, Marié-Davy, Rien, Jacobi, etc.). In particular, interesting considerations on Joule's work. "The mechanical theory of heat is a part of physics that is still very new, but which has received important developments that have brought it, in a few years, to the point where it has arrived today. Without wishing to discuss the rights of the scientists who have precisely stated the fundamental principle on which it rests, and the part played by Sadi Carnot, Mr. Séguin and Mayer in the origin of this research, one cannot help recognizing that M. Joule is the physicist who, through his experimental research, has perhaps contributed most to the creation of the mechanical theory of heat [...]". An 8 pp. in-4 manuscript on the letterhead of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, lists all the works published by Moritz von Jacobi.
