Matthew MOGGRIDGE (1803-1882), naturalist and geologist, Joh - Lot 95
Matthew MOGGRIDGE (1803-1882), naturalist and geologist, John's father, walked the Alpes-Maritimes for over 10 years, from October to May, collecting a large number of plants for his son's book. He published in Gardener's Chronicle and Edinburgh Bot. Soc. the results of his observations on the plants of the Alpes-Maritimes. He donated his herbarium to the Kew Museum. 2 autograph letters signed to Honoré Ardoïno. 7 pp. in-16. The Willows, Swansea, Aug.-Sept. 1862. About his Catalogue de la Flore de Menton et Monaco. "I shall with great pleasure present copies of your interesting work to Messrs. Hooker and Watson on your behalf, thanking you very much for the one you have promised me [...]. Please remember, Sir, that my son found a pretty little blue flower under the Pont Saint-Louis. I told you about it, but it was sent to England so that you cannot see it. One of our very famous botanists named it Convolvulus siculus, after a dried sample that came from the island of Sicily, or in southern Italy. He (i.e. Mr. Bentham) says that this plant is usually found but is very rare further north. Do you agree? Returning from a trip to the Isles of Scilly, he recounts his discoveries.
