Théophile CANUT (1827-1874), botanist, made numerous herbori - Lot 82
Théophile CANUT (1827-1874), botanist, made numerous herborizations in the Alpes-Maritimes and the upper Tinée valley from 1852 to 1869; he supplied Thuret and Bornet with a large number of plants, and was particularly interested in orchids. 10 autograph letters signed to Honoré Ardoïno. 28 pp. in-8. Nice, 1863-1867. Important correspondence, all devoted to the flora around Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes, the creation of his herbarium and their collaboration on the subject. "I do not, however, regret having visited the S. Etienne valley as far as the Enchartraie pass [...]. Among the few good plants I brought back, here are the names of those I was able to recognize on a first inspection and of which I hold specimens at your disposal [...]. I will start the catalog of my herbarium on the first day and, as soon as it is finished, I will send it to you for the localities. In this way, the work will be better done and more complete". He lists plants collected during his botanical excursions, etc. "Buplerum Fructicosum L. New plant for the Alpes Maritimes. I found it in the Bois de Liauson, near St Etienne-des-Monts, on August 8, 1863. Opaponax Chironium Koch. Abundant plant in the locality known as La Plaine de Drap (formerly La Colle de Drap), where I discovered it on August 14, 1866 [...]".
