Alphonse de CANDOLLE (Geneva 1806-1893), Swiss botanist. - Lot 81
Alphonse de CANDOLLE (Geneva 1806-1893), Swiss botanist. Autograph letter signed to Honoré Ardoïno. 4 pp. in-8. Geneva, December 26, 1862. Beautiful and interesting letter after receiving his work on the Flora of Menton and Monaco, discussing the origin of species. "In an opuscule sur l'Espèce that I will have the honor of sending you shortly, I returned to the question of the origin of the forms of the Mediterranean region. It seems to me that species that arrived during the Ice Age can be distinguished and recognized fairly reliably by their distribution on the islands, while the great mass of other Mediterranean species date back to an earlier period, close to the Tertiary, if not the Tertiary itself. There was then an irruption of boreal plants like that of the barbarian peoples in the midst of Roman civilization". He submits to him the study of a question of plant physiology which has remained obscure to him: "it seems that the same temperature, either in minimum or in sum, does not act in the same way on the same species in the north and in the south". He gave him examples and a list of plants to study in particular.
