Henri de VILMORIN (1843-1899), botanist, nurseryman and bree - Lot 67
Henri de VILMORIN (1843-1899), botanist, nurseryman and breeder, he was the first to practice wheat hybridization, enabling him to obtain 18 high-yielding wheat strains; he headed Vilmorin & Andrieux from 1873. Autograph letter signed. 2 pp. ½ in-8, headed "Vilmorin Andrieux & Cie". Paris, May 1st. Interesting letter on chrysanthemums. He acknowledges receipt of his letter and the flower it contains. "The Chrysanthemum flower in question seems to me to be extremely close to the "Chaumette" variety of Chrysanthemum pinnatifide; the florets are a little larger than those of the ordinary yellow variety, and the leaves are almost as dissected as those of C. fr. foeniculaum. This variety is not very widespread, as white ones are generally preferred, but it is occasionally found in gardens. If it has sprung spontaneously from a white Chrysanthemum frutescent, it may be worth continuing to sow in the hope of obtaining new varieties. It should be remembered, however, that with frutescent Chrysanthemums, it is the abundance and perpetuity of flowering that are desired, at least as much as the beauty of the flowers; the latter quality should probably not be given too much importance [...]".
