Ludovic SAVATIER (1830-1891), botanist and explorer, regarde - Lot 56
Ludovic SAVATIER (1830-1891), botanist and explorer, regarded in Japan as the father of modern botany. Autograph letter signed [to Charles Blanc, according to a pencil note]. 3 pp. in-8. Lorient, September 17, 1881. Very beautiful and rare letter on his Flore du Japon. "It was published by Savy, boulevard St Germain, and is entitled "Enumeratio plantarum in Japonia sponte crescentium..." 2 vol. gd in 8°. This work is the result of research carried out during more than ten years spent in Japan. Begun in 1872, almost under the auspices of Monsieur Thiers, to whom my poor friend Ricard had spoken of my early work on Japan, it could not be completed until 1879, & I regretted, because of the high price, not being able to enclose the four volumes of plates I possess, done from life, under my direction, by Japanese artists. I hope that when I return from a forthcoming campaign, I will be able to realize the project I have formed of producing a 2nd edition, more complete, with plates. If it is a question, Sir, of determining the botanical species of Japan or the Far East, and if a serious study is desired, no one could carry out this little work as successfully as my collaborator and friend Mr. A. Franchet [botanist Adrien Franchet (1834-1900), who co-authored the work], currently attached to the herbarium of the Muséum [...]".
