Charles-Frédéric MARTINS (1806-1889), botanist and meteorolo - Lot 40
Charles-Frédéric MARTINS (1806-1889), botanist and meteorologist, director of the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, author of a Tératologie végétale, made several botanical expeditions to Spitzbergen and the Sahara desert. He had an extensive correspondence with Charles Darwin. Set of 2 autograph letters signed: - [to geographer Élisée Reclus (1830-1905)]. 3 pp. in-16. Montpellier, June 24, 1879. He sends him a map of Bellsound Bay, as well as a memoir on sea temperatures in the vicinity of Spitzbergen. "I have had the lively satisfaction for an old scholar of receiving a letter from Mr. Mohn, director of the Christiana observatory, who has rediscovered in Magdalena Bay the same temperatures I had observed 40 years before. I read with great pleasure what you published about Norway. So many new facts since we visited! And I am very grateful to you for recalling the observations of the scientific commission of 1839 [...]". - to "Mr. President". 2 pp. in-8. December 15, 1848. He presents his candidacy for the society his correspondent has just founded, and talks about his work: "it has a common character: the study of climatological influences on living beings. Thanks to the many links that unite botanical and zoological geography, as well as paleontology with the biological sciences, I may be able to contribute my small share of light to the discussions of the Society over which you preside".
