François LEVAILLANT (1753-1824), traveler and ornithologist. - Lot 38
François LEVAILLANT (1753-1824), traveler and ornithologist. Autograph letter signed "L.V." to his former wife, Suzanne Denoor, who bore him four children and from whom he divorced in August 1793. 3 pp. in-4. Undated (revolutionary period). Address on back. Long letter written during the Revolution, at the time of his divorce. He finds himself in a very delicate financial situation (he was imprisoned under the Terror), and has already paid more than he owes for their eldest daughter; he asks her for a more active participation for the other children. "All our affairs will be finished incessantly, Madame, and we shall probably be separated. I know that you propose to go and live in the province and that I will go elsewhere when I can too. I therefore ask you that we see each other once and that, forgetting all that we may have against each other, we give each other the kiss of peace and part as friends [...]". And to conclude with this formula: "Salut et concorde". A rare item.
